SENIOR MECHANICAL ENGINEER
POSITION OVERVIEW:
At Hazelett, you’ll design and develop the mechanical systems which power our world-class industrial machinery. This role blends creative design with hands-on engineering, offering opportunities to work on both continuous metal casting equipment and custom machinery that supports our internal manufacturing operations.
The work is broad, technically challenging, and draws on a wide range of engineering disciplines. Projects typically involve both static and dynamic assemblies and must integrate hydraulic, water, electronic, and automation systems to achieve the required machine functions. Engineering analysis, including structural, thermal, and fluid dynamics modeling, is a regular part of the design process.
In this role, you'll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams of electrical, automation, and process engineers to develop innovative and reliable solutions. You'll also contribute throughout the project lifecycle, applying mechanical design expertise, problem-solving skills, and sound engineering judgment to complex technical challenges.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in mechanical design, experience managing large engineering projects, and a passion for product development. We welcome candidates from mechanical engineering and related disciplines, and your title and compensation will reflect your technical expertise and level of design responsibility.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Lead the mechanical design of complex machinery, working closely with the electrical, automation, and process teams to ensure integration and optimal functionality.
Foster a creative environment for product conception and development, contributing ideas and solutions to improve the design and performance of casting equipment.
Diagnose and resolve product issues during prototyping, production, and field operations to ensure product quality and reliability.
Develop and oversee the testing of design concepts to validate the functionality and performance of new systems and machinery.
Use both 2D and 3D CAD systems (SolidWorks) to generate design concepts, layouts, assembly drawings, and other necessary technical documentation, including Bills of Material (BOM), Project Outlines, and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).
Interact with suppliers to specify and select components, ensuring that all materials and parts meet project requirements and specifications.
Occasionally travel domestically and internationally for projects, including to commission and service casting equipment at customer sites, providing technical support and resolving operational challenges.
Perform any other duties as assigned to support project success and team needs.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. 5 to 15 years of experience in Mechanical Design Engineering, with a proven ability to lead large and complex projects.
In-depth knowledge of geometric tolerancing, machine design conventions, materials, rotating equipment, hydraulic systems, structures, and load/stress analysis.
Strong proficiency in SolidWorks (preferred) or other 2D/3D CAD systems for designing and modeling complex machinery.
Ability to troubleshoot and address design challenges in various stages of product development and deployment.
Excellent communication and documentation skills to prepare detailed reports, technical drawings, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and suppliers.
Willingness to travel domestically and internationally for project work, including on-site commissioning and servicing of equipment.
