MECHANICAL DESIGN INTERN
Hazelett Corporation is seeking summer interns to work with our team of Mechanical Designers and Engineers. Our goal is to engage students with at least two years of relevant studies or experience to work on a designated project and gain hands-on experience over the summer.
WHO WE ARE
Hazelett Corporation is a company that is recognized worldwide for our leading metals processing technology. Our continuous casting process is renowned for its high productivity and energy efficiency. We pride ourselves on our robust machine design and in-house manufacturing and assembly capabilities. The materials produced by our machines are used in many applications such as aluminum automotive body components, aluminum foil, lead-acid automotive batteries, and copper wire and cables.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Mechanical Design Intern will be responsible for a small design project aimed at giving you a meaningful design experience, and solving a pressing issue at Hazelett. You’ll work with mentors to optimize the design and serviceability of key subassemblies on our continuous copper casting machines. Your designs will have to survive in a harsh industrial environment. Along the way, you’ll sharpen skills in design, modeling, GD&T, drafting updates to hardware or fixtures.
THE CHALLENGE
We are looking for goal-oriented students who are eager to apply their problem-solving skills to real engineering challenges. This role may include efforts such as:
Learning and understanding the mechanical systems and processes that enable continuous casting operations.
Researching and troubleshooting mechanical or process-related issues in a manufacturing environment.
Applying engineering principles learned in school to real-world equipment and process challenges.
Taking ownership of an engineering project, including experiment or test design, data collection, analysis, and preparation of a final report.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
If you have the following qualifications, we encourage you to apply.
Curiosity and willingness to learn new skills and technologies.
An energetic, innovative, and open-minded approach to mechanical and design challenges.
Proficiency in the use of SolidWorks or other CAD software.
Familiarity with geometric tolerancing, standard design conventions, and machine design principles.
General awareness of structures, materials, joining methods, rotating equipment, hydraulic systems, and load or stress analysis.
Awareness of manufacturing processes, capabilities, and procedures.
Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively document, report, and present engineering findings.
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Pursuing an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a closely related discipline, or possessing a similar level of design education or experience through a high school technical program.
Hands-on experience designing or building projects through a degree program, apprenticeship, professional experience, or significant personal projects.
Ideally, candidates will have completed two years of relevant coursework.
