Manager, Electrical Automation Engineering

POSITION OVERVIEW:

As the Manager of the Electrical and Automation Engineering team, you will play a vital role in shaping the future of Hazelett’s technology as a key member of Hazelett’s leadership group. In this role, you’ll lead a talented team of engineers responsible for developing, implementing, and supporting the electrical and automation systems that power Hazelett’s Continuous Casting solutions, as well as work on the systems for Hazelett’s internal development and manufacturing operations.

We are looking for applicants with a strong mix of both technical skills and a passion for leading people; someone who enjoys mentoring engineers, building a collaborative team culture, and driving continuous improvement. At Hazelett no problem is solved in isolation. You and your team will work closely with colleagues across the organization to tackle complex engineering and controls challenges, and contribute innovative solutions across every aspect of our casting machines and related systems.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • People Management: Your primary responsibility will be to manage and support a team of electrical, automation and controls engineers, ensuring that they have the resources, training, and support to succeed.

  • Project Leadership: Help oversee the execution of automation and controls projects, starting from the scoping and resource planning, to checking in on the progress of the project itself and helping to find solutions to problems when they arise.

  • Communication: Foster clear communication both within the team and with management, as well as across manufacturing, development engineering, and other functional groups.

  • Problem Solving and Continuous Improvement: Identify roadblocks and challenges standing in the way of the team and the business goals, and help implement solutions to improve on both the engineering processes as well as the overall product quality.

  • Strategic Contributions: Help shape how Hazelett uses automation going forward, deciding what technologies to use, modernizing standards for how systems are built, and making sure those ideas are put into practice to improve and support future growth.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

  • Technical Expertise: Strong understanding of how electrical and automation systems work in industrial equipment. This includes hands-on experience with PLCs, operator interfaces, industrial networks, and the control systems used to run and monitor machinery in a manufacturing environment. Hazelett works with both Siemens and Allen Bradley and so experience with one or both of these is a strong positive.

  • Leadership and Team Management: Strong skills in supervising and mentoring a team, supporting sustainable growth, collaboration and performance in a technical environment.

  • Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, collaborate, and work effectively with both technical teams and leadership.

  • Project Oversight: Ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously, from planning to execution, ensuring deadlines and resource requirements are met.

  • Independent and Collaborative Working: Capability to work independently with minimal supervision, while also working collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

  • Educational Requirements: A minimum of a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, with 10+ years of experience preferred.

  • Management Experience: Proven history of supervising or managing teams within a project or functional area.

  • Additional Training: Experience with industrial automation platforms (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens), robotics, or advanced manufacturing technologies is considered a plus. Formal management training, particularly in people management and conflict resolution, is also a plus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Duties will be carried out in an office environment, manufacturing production floor, and at customer and supplier sites as required, which might include occasional exposure to fumes, noise, and gases from equipment or machinery. The employee must utilize personal safety equipment when working on the production floor. Travel to attend meetings and visit customers is required.
