Metal flow is regulated in the open pool feeding system by means of the EMLI®* (ElectroMagnetic Level Indication) flow control system. Sending and receiving coils are mounted within the water cooling area behind the belts. The AC low frequency flux is attenuated by the molten metal between the coils. This provides a proportional signal to a servomotor, which actuates the stopper rod to control metal flow from the lower launder into the tundish. The caster pool position can be held within +/- 2.5 mm along the belt, which maintains a constant casting speed and is a significant improvement compared to manual or optical control. *EMLI is a trademark of Metal Process Control, Inc. |
