The EMLI®* system, first adopted by Hazelett to provide an automatic metal flow control system for copper bar casting, is used in the copper anode caster to ensure accurate filling of the mold and anode lug pocket molds. Hazelett has adopted the EMLI system, originally developed by the Swedish Atomic Energy Commission, for sensing the pool level in the caster. A proportional signal is provided, which actuates the stopper rod to control metal flow from the lower launder into the tundish. Casting speed is held constant, and the casting process is fully automatic. Sending and receiving coils are mounted on each side of the mold within the water cooling area. The AC low frequency flux, which is received, is attenuated by the molten metal between the coils providing a precise indication of the molten pool level. *EMLI is a trademark of Metal Process Control, Inc. |
