Extensive, ongoing research and development is carried out at the Hazelett facility and on-site at customer installations. Full and part-time R&D personnel utilize the latest instrumentation, data acquisition and processing systems, and computer-based analysis software, to accomplish their goals. In-house water modeling, molten metal preparation and pouring, and caster water flow simulation, are used where appropriate. A fully equipped and staffed metallurgical laboratory is utilized extensively. Resulting improvements are immediately engineered for incorporation into operating casters, auxiliary systems, and new designs. A wide range of permanent metallic/ceramic matrix coatings for the casting surface of the casting belts has been developed. The continuing program of testing and evaluating these coating compositions, thicknesses, and surface textures is carried out to optimize casting machine performance for the various metals cast. Also, renewable "mold release" coatings including electrostatically applied (ESP) coatings continue to be developed and evaluated. |
